Des Moines, Iowa – Governor Branstad has signed the last of the 2015 budget bills, but not before slicing massive holes through bipartisan compromises designed to keep Iowa strong. It was barely eight months ago he was laying it on thick in the campaign, promising Iowans greatness when it comes to education, health care and jobs.

It’s important to remember Branstad is an old-school politician who believes there doesn’t need to be a relationship between what you say in a campaign and how you govern. He missed the part where voters can keep tabs on their government 24/7 these days.

The real Branstad, by contrast with the campaign image, works under cover of darkness to undo Iowa’s progress at every turn. Iowans deserve better than gauzy campaign ads that fade into the reality of a politician who believes he’s not accountable.

The tide of veto ink can only be turned if Iowans have a chance to compare the Governor’s recent actions to his 2014 campaign promises. In the giant, ugly gap between promise and performance, we’ll find the wreckage of whatever character Terry Branstad once had.
