Hillsborough commissioners vote to remove Confederate lobby flag

TAMPA County commissioners today voted to remove the Confederate flag from the lobby of the Frederick B. Karl County Center 20 years after it was put on display as part of a compromise to remove the Stars and Bars image from the county seal.
The vote was unanimous as Commissioner Stacy White, who earlier said he wanted to keep the flag up because of its place in Florida history, joined the majority.
The vote was a victory for Les Miller, the only black commissioner, who acknowledged the flag is indeed a part of Southern history but called it a history that represents slavery and racism for black Americans.
This flag to me hurts, Miller said, after pausing to wipe away tears. Its going to the history museum, its going to a place where people can go there and read about all of the confederate flags and about what it means to this country ...
