"That's nonsense. And you should know better."http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/obama-major-garrett_55a6a25ee4b0c5f0322c1659?
President Barack Obama publicly scolded CBS News' Major Garrett during a gathering of the press corps at the White House on Wednesday, chastising the reporter for asking if the president is "content" to celebrate the Iran nuclear deal while four American hostages remain in Iran.
"That's nonsense. And you should know better," Obama replied.
Obama answered questions about the Iran nuclear deal during the gathering, saying it's "our best means of assuring that Iran does not get a nuclear weapon."
The bottom line is this. This nuclear deal meets the national security interests of the United States and our allies," Obama said. "It prevents the most serious threat of Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon thats why this deal makes our country safer and secure.
Ive got to give you credit, Major, for how you craft those questions, Obama said, before admonishing the reporter.
The notion that Im content as I celebrate with American citizens languishing in Iranian jails, Major, thats nonsense, and you should know better, the president said.
(snip)
My question did not suggest that he was content with the captivity of those four Americans, Garrett said. My question was about the contentment, or the satisfaction, or the realization that it was necessary within the context of this deal to leave them unaccounted for. That was the essence of the question.
Clearly it struck a nerve, he added. That was my intention.

(81,310 posts)Granted, trying to impeach President Obama is about the only thing they HAVEN'T tried. But I think they don't want to go there, even in their desperation, because enough of their leaders don't want to get that on them again. Just as they're TRYING to avoid anyone's moves to shut down the government again. At least SOME of 'em know deep down that such bullshit moves do not serve them well with the general population of voters. Granted, that doesn't stop all of them. A tiny sliver out there would give ANYTHING to try to impeach, AND maybe if they're really lucky, to get the government shut down DURING the impeachment proceedings, as well. A Two-fer for All Time! TWO brass rings in one! Two anarchists' wet-dreams in one!
But there aren't enough of them to get anything like that going, again, for real. Thank God.

No, we don['t like every decision he's made, but imagine where we'd all be now if things hadn't gone our way 6 years ago...give the guy a little credit...

I believe some persons who fall into the hands of certain nations are independent travelers or journalists or missionaries who have either broken the laws of the countries they are visiting or have deliberately or through lack of knowledge or naivete or misplaced idealism put themselves in jeopardy. In so doing, they put their native country - USA- in an extremely difficult position, where oft times normal diplomacy is not enough to undo their folly or damage.

"If we don't resolve this hostage issue we're... we're... we're just never going to curtail your nuclear development programs! So there!"
Yeah, that would be brilliant example of cutting off your nose to spite your face. They are separate issues. Sabotaging the one to pursue the other would be stupid. You simply pursue them both in parallel.
And frankly, if you don't think generating a ton of good will among the Iranian people by concluding this deal isn't going to help on the other front you're not thinking things through.

There were other countries involved in these negotiations, not just us. And to scuttle the deal for everyone else, simply because America didn't get everything on our wishlist would have been a slap in the face to the rest of the world.
The Americans in question are not POW's, so the quote you've attributed to Pres. Obama is absolutely ridiculous. This deal potentially opens the door to increased cooperation with Iran on a whole host of side issues.

The agreement is truly a multi-national agreement and literally has the support of the world - with the notable exceptions of RW US Republicans and the Israeli government represented by Netanyahu.
Getting one's own citizens out of trouble is a bi-lateral negotiation - which is certainly MUCH easier to negotiate when one has re-established diplomatic agreements with the country that is holding them.
The "four prisoners" meme is certainly an ongoing RW talking point to detract from the very real accomplishments of this historic undertaking. If you are not a RWer, but truly a Democrat who believes that this deal - as most international legal experts believe - is a good one, please do not repeat RW talking points here. Please.

(16,646 posts)I thought he did a fairly adequate job. But what is being missed by many is that the opponents actually were "using" the sanctions to address a wide variety of issues with Iran beyond just a nuclear weapon capability. They saw it as a way to "defund" terrorism coming from Iran, to prevent Iran from having a "conventional" military capability, and as a way to try to foment revolution in the country. One or two folks probably also saw it as an opportunity to try to get hostages released, and probably not just the ones in Iran. Countries in the region, many of them our allies, also saw this as a way to contain the threat of Iran to the region. And of course the "Cheney wing" wanted to invade/attack Iran for a wide variety of regional goals and this made a pat excuse for them.
Obama's goal was narrow. His focus was to prevent a nuclear weapon capability. It has been a theme of his prior to becoming president, the prevention of the spread of nuclear weapons and in fact trying to reduce the total number in the world. I suspect, and he would do well to explain this if it is true, that the other nations involved probably also has a fairly narrow goal here of preventing a nuclear weapon. The other issues we have with Iran may not be as nearly universal, especially with a Russia or China.
By the way, there is almost assuredly some intent/pressure/consideration of the fact that dumping all that Iranian oil onto the already depressed oil markets will only push oil prices down further. That will cost a lot of countries and their companies money and impact the exploration industry as well.
All in all this issue goes well beyond nuclear weapons for most of the people who are voicing criticism. I've listen to quite a bit of Obama's arguments, but the closest he tends to pointing this out is when he challenges people to offer alternatives. If they did, they would expose themselves for being more concerned about other issues than about nuclear weapons. I think he probably has to call them out because right now they are not obviously exposing themselves.

I watched ABC news and the first thing they said was that Obama would have to address "his critics at home and around the world" as if the planet were teeming with critics. Then David Muir giddily told us that his new best friend, Netanyahu, told him stuff, like personally -- "he told me" -- that everything Obama does is bad, as usual.

And boy was he ready. Obama all but said "Now go to your room." Garrett's childish response to Obama's "bullying" was just short of "I know you are but what am I". If we lifted sanctions from certain problematic individuals in Iran's army or guard or whatever, why didn't we say, "OK, we'll do that if you return our four Americans"?
