You know how the rightwing loves to worship the American flag and rant about all the supposed liberals burning flags and how awful that is?
But isn't flying the Confederate flag taking a crap on our nation's flag with all it's 50 stars?
I unintentionally po'd a wingnut on Facebook by saying the nation's flag represented MY heritage.
It was one of those unexpected funny things that can happen, IYKWIM.

Many found that offensive, esp. since this is Texas. Mexico, IIRC, lost the war. Oops. Wars.
It didn't bother me. They were Mexican.
On the other hand, on the 4th of July they flew the American flag. Sometimes the Mexican flag, as well.
The flag represented their attitudes nicely enough. They were complicated. Their heritage wasn't just represented by the US flag.
It's no less offensive, to be sure, than celebrating the occupation of Texas year after year and reminding Southerners of their humiliating defeat.

(7,234 posts)Blacks didnt win the right to vote until near a century after the emancipation proclamation and they were prevented from seeking equal education, oh and lets not forget all the secret medical experiments, sterilizations, lynching, etc, etc that was done under our glorious nation's flag.
I really wish people didnt re-white history.

(21,925 posts)I wouldn't say it's taking a crap on our flag to see it displayed. Thousands of southerners have fought and died for the American flag since the Civil war. It's just not our flag and doesn't belong on government buildings any more than the Italian, German, or Japanese flags do.
