Scott Walker’s non-defense of gay bashing

By Jennifer Rubin July 15 at 10:00 AM

Yesterday, I took issue with Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s slur of gay men when he suggested the previous Boy Scout ban on gay troop leaders was needed so children would be “protected.” On Tuesday evening, a spokeswoman for Walker’s campaign had this reaction: “The previous policy protected Scouts from the rancorous political debate over policy issues and culture wars. Scouts should not be used as a political football on issues that can often be heated and divisive.”

That’s a creative but unpersuasive spin on the governor’s egregious comment. (The spokeswoman did not say, you will note, that this is what Walker actually meant.) The notion that scouts were “protected” from debate is patently false. It put the scouts front and center in a raging debate and deprived the scouts of access to public facilities and support from a variety of public officials, among other things. This is why the board of the Boy Scouts voted unanimously to end the ban.

It is ironic that the governor would object to using the scouts as a football. There was no need to comment on the issue, and to my knowledge no other presidential candidate decided to use the Boy Scouts to boost his or her profile with social conservatives............

I asked the spokeswoman if the governor thought children needed to be protected from gay men. She did not respond. I asked if he had spoken with his sons, who publicly declared their opposition to their father’s vow to seek a constitutional amendment permitting states to bar gay marriage. She did not respond to that either. Perhaps others can ask the governor directly...................

WASHINGTON – The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization, released the following statement after Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker's campaign refused to answer a question from a Washington Post columnist about whether Walker "thought children needed to be protected from gay men." According to the story, Walker's spokesperson "did not respond."

HRC’s Director of Policy and Political Affairs JoDee Winterhof released the following statement:

“Scott Walker claims to be a new face on the national stage, but he’s introducing himself to a national audience with an outdated and offensive idea. He and his campaign should answer this simple, straightforward question: Does he think we pose a threat to the health and safety of children? Yes or no? His campaign's attempt to duck this simple question is unworthy of a candidate who is seeking an office that is responsible for representing all Americans – including LGBT people.”

Yesterday, Walker asserted that he supports the Boy Scouts of America (BSA)’s current discriminatory policy that bars gay, lesbian and bisexual adults from serving as employees and troop leaders because it "protected" children. ..................
