Not percentage. Number.
http://financialjuneteenth.com/for-first-time-ever-number-of-black-kids-in-poverty-higher-than-number-of-white-kids/
This has occurred despite the fact that white children outnumber Black children 3 to 1. This means that not only has the economic recovery missed certain segments of the population, it has left behind some of the countrys most vulnerable citizens.
Pews definition of poverty is a family of four that has an income under $24,000 a year. Based on this definition, 2 our of every 5, or 38 percent, of the 11 million Black children in the U.S. live in poverty. This is in direct opposition to the fact that the overall number of children living in poverty in the U.S. dropped from 16.3 million in 2010 to 14.7 million in 2013.
Mark Hugo Lopez, the director of Hispanic research at the Pew Research Center, says that the differences in poverty rates for American children can be attributed to the employment and income differences faced by parents. Lopez states, The labor market has recovered, but the recovery has been uneven. Black parents are more likely to be unemployed, and even when they are employed, they earn less money than other races.

When people arent given a chance, they don't have a choice.
Welcome to the real world white suburbia.

(3,732 posts)No need to split off "the social". We need to fix our economic problems, and this is for everyone.
I love how this study underscores in a super fat red sharpie that The Southern Strategy actually sabotaged poor whites. Stop letting dog whistles appeal to your lowest race-baitable instincts, suckers.

(32,886 posts)It's due to racism and bias in hiring affecting their parents that there are such a high percentage of African American children living in poverty such that they can have more in number than white children in poverty.
And the information is out there in a number of studies. It's easier for a white person with a felony conviction to get hired than an African American person with a clean record all things being equal. Latinos have anglicized their name, resubmitted their otherwise same resume to a firm that wouldn't give them a callback, and BAM, they get called for an interview.
The economy improving overall won't fix that.

(13,184 posts)No, an improving economy will not vanquish racism, but being able to get a job or getting better pay makes people's lives better. That doesn't mean you quit pushing against racism, though.
