Maybe its also because Roof murdered African Americans and the other guy murdered Marines.

Personally I have come to believe many in the media and political circles (and those that follow them) would prefer to cover the shooting in TN then the massacre in SC. It fits better for them. "A non white non Christian kills 4 Marines" is a way better story optics wise, ego boosting and for fear factors, for them then "White Supremacist murders 9 un armed black people in a church at a bible study group" or "White man slaughters 20 elementary students at school."
All deaths in this manner are horrible and tragic but some people feel the need to but more importance on the death of one individual over another individual. It should not be that way.
My heart aches for the people that were killed in TN just as it did when the 9 were killed in SC and the other 4 in Maine, the victims at Sandy Hook and the ones in the theater in CO. My heart ached when the Oklahoma Federal building was blown up as much as it ached on 911.
Its the way this most recent event is being covered that angers me.
