(9,033 posts)IIRC talk was that if officer Casebolt (of TX pool party fame) had been fired instead of resigning, he would never have gotten another LEO job.
Another myth, busted.

(35,332 posts)The sheriff wasn't fired; it's an elected office in Texas, 4-year term. The sheriff's the top dog for a county's police force (with constables in charge of precincts under him).
There's no constraint saying that fired police officers can't run and be elected to office, no such impediment to the will of the people. There's an education requirement.
This guy was fired from his job as an officer, promptly ran for sheriff, and was elected. He got a promotion, in other words. Ain't democracy grand?
If the sheriff's slot is vacated, then the county commissioners court can appoint a replacement to finish his term of office. Harris County has an appointed sheriff. Adrian Garcia resigned to run for mayor.

Police departments love abusive cops. Shows they are tough and too compassionate.
