It will be interesting to see if the honorable Secretaries will be given the same politeness that will likely be accorded the mean spirited Prime Minister of Israel.

(63,912 posts)He needs some down time at his Nantucket house...the man looks exhausted...

(59,504 posts)He looks exhausted, but his comments answering critic's points are as good as anyone's and consistently better than most. He knows the stuff backwards and forward and obviously worked through every decision made very methodologically. Moniz, obviously knows the nuclear technical issues better, but Kerry understands the politics and how to present things better. Together they make an incredible team - and it is great that they have been friends since at least 2004.
There is no one person better suited to selling this to the Senate and House - though I suspect that Obama will use every resource he has. I would not be surprised if after these hearings, he and Teresa do take some time in Nantucket (though obviously with no windsurfing!) At that point, they will still be working on the Congressional vote. However, the Congress people will not be in DC anyway. Not to mention, they all have phones - and I would imagine that there will likely be only a relatively small number who will be winnable, but not yet with the President.
I am wondering if he might go to NYC to be there when Powers introduces the resolution on Monday morning. UPDATED TO SAY HE IS MEETING IN DC WITH THE CUBAN OPE ING THEIR EMBASSY. It would likely be a good thing to do as it will get huge international support. (I wonder if that -- like the positive energy a candidate exudes when they win a primary could the same phenomena help in this very different situation. Even if Kerry and the others don't go, could coverage of Samantha Powers introducing this and having it pass generate momentum for this. )
(Speaking of that, given that there are ads everywhere for the other side, at some point, I hope that DU lobbies to support the President in avoiding war with the same intensity they fought various campaigns that led to war. )

(63,912 posts)this whole roll out has been a textbook lesson on how to do statecraft. This is mindblowing...
When they had Kerry on Morning Joe, it was blindingly clear that Kerry had pukes like Joe over a barrel. The GOP is running around with their hair on fire and not much else...

acceptance from the American people. This is a watershed moment in foreign policy and it is important that American people see it for what it really is - a rejection of the neo con philosophy of at least the last two decades for the Obama policy (yes it is what Kerry spoke of for decades, but it is Obama who had the power to do it and had to the guts to fight all the entrenched forces - and it looks like he won. As to Kerry, anyone speaking of few accomplishments ignoring each in turn and no real vision needs to just be quiet for a while.)

Reading this, you can see that Obama/Kerry have genuinely outplayed Netanyahu and Congress. First, and most importantly, the deal is good - just as they said. Second, once the UN passes this - even though there is a gap of time before it is implemented. It is really a fait accompli.
Note that there is no reason for Iran to back out if Congress really could stop the US. The international sanctions are the bigger deal. Not to mention, doyou think our international companies will be happy if ONLY THEY can't do business?
I liked Wendy Sherman's comment here:
But the chief U.S. negotiator in the Iran talks, Wendy Sherman, rejected that idea Thursday.
She told reporters: "It would have been a little difficult when all of the (countries negotiating with Iran) wanted to go to the United Nations to get an endorsement of this, since it is a product of the United Nations process, for us to say, 'Well, excuse me, the world, you should wait for the United States Congress.'"
Sherman said the council resolution allows the "time and space" for a congressional review before the measure actually takes effect.

(63,912 posts)but the resolution is a well planned tactic to allow time to make their case to the American people and then the ball is in the repukes court in the Senate. The AMerican people are waiting...

(59,504 posts)I hope that the media covers it and that the world has a pretty overwhelming vote for it. This would mean that Kerry and Moniz come to the SFRC (I think Tuesday) with this and the earlier happy announcement out of the capitals and Vienna.
I really like Wendy Sherman and having seen on this and on a recent video, I really don't get why the WH opted to over rule Kerry selecting her as the deputy rather than Blinken. He seems good, but she is fabulous and clearly deserved that promotion.
