Attorney General Mark Herring weighs in on rebel flag in Danville (VA)

SUTHERLIN — Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring weighed in on whether the third national Confederate flag should be removed from the Sutherlin Mansion in Danville.

“Ultimately, it’s a decision for the City Council to make,” Herring said during a visit Monday at the Virginia Rules Camp at Camp Selah in Sutherlin in Pittsylvania County.

However, Herring said he understood why the Confederate flag is a symbol of oppression for some people. The flag does not belong in public places on public property, he said.

Herring added that the flag should come down. As for whether state law should be changed to allow removal of the flag from the museum in Danville, Herring said that is up to the General Assembly ...
