Mayor Landrieu's Welcome Table hosts meeting to discuss Confederate monuments (LA)

A racial reconciliation initiative supported by Mayor Mitch Landrieu is hosting a meeting Thursday (July 30) where church leaders from throughout the city will discuss his proposal to take down four Confederate monuments from public property.

It's the second of two meetings facilitated by Welcome Table New Orleans, a program Landrieu started with the help of the William Winter Institute at the University of Mississippi. The mayor's office clarified Thursday morning that Landrieu is not taking part in the event, which involves a series of breakout sessions with attendees participating in smaller group discussions.

Until Thursday morning, the mayor's office had indicated invitations were sent only to a group of ministers and members of the Tricentennial Committee, a group of Landrieu appointees who are planning the city's 300th anniversary celebration for 2018.
