FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. Following President Obamas reelection in 2012 a win powered in part by historic black voter turnout Republicans launched an aggressive outreach effort aimed at African American voters. Never again, they vowed, would they concede that sort of overwhelming demographic advantage to Democrats.
Now, heading into an election without Obama at the top of the ticket, many Republicans say they are positioned to make inroads with black voters.
That sense of opportunity was clear Friday when the party establishments favorite, former Florida governor Jeb Bush, addressed the annual meeting of the National Urban League in his home state. He spoke to the predominantly African American crowd about his record of helping blacks and his plans to do more. He touched on his removal of the Confederate flag from the state capitol grounds, his gubernatorial record on diversity and how his education reforms helped black students.
If we dont create an education system that allows young people to reach [the rungs on the ladder of success], were setting them up for a lifetime of failure, he said. So you and I have to call this situation what it is: the worst inequality in America today, and the source of so many other inequalities.

(6,913 posts)They are kidding themselves. They think people are so stupid they won't notice what you do, but will just believe what you say.
Of course, people do vote against their own self interests, do maybe they will get somewhere with this. I hope and think voters will see though them.

(51,076 posts)the gop's only hope to win in November '16 is with wedge issues. other than those they really don't have anything to run on.
Personally I think they're barking up the wrong tree as I don't think our AA citizens can't see through their bullshit and see it for what it is. Thats ok though as they're out there yapping it up it's taking time off the clock
Bernie has this one, due to integrity, honesty and a long history of being on the right side of the issues that so many of us hold dearly. If the gop want to hold on to any semblance of power at all they need to focus on the other two branches of our government, the House and Senate.

(10,650 posts)The republiclowns fall all over themselves defending these out of control, black youth murdering cops. What black person (or sensible white person) is going to vote for that?

(52,163 posts)and this outreach is more for moderate whites anyway. If they can get to 10% of the black vote that would be a bonus for them but what they are really attempting to do is make it OK for white people who don't like racists to vote for them.

(17,651 posts)I think the only black people who'd give their votes to republicans are the same crew that would ordinarily vote for them; those who have "$arrived$" or values voters (homophobes, anti-choice, stepford wives or any other value I can't think of atm).

(12,799 posts)The blatant racism exposed under Obama's presidency doesn't seem like a good foundation to woo black voters. As for Jeb Bush talking about creating an education system, I think he has profited well enough from the test-mania that currently absorbs our school system.
I can't express enough how much I detest that man -- on his own merits, with no help from the reputations of his father or brother.
