When popular celebrities step up, it might make a difference.
I hope she will stay in the fray, as she stated.
*For those who missed it, Schumer did a presser today with her cousin, NY Senator Chuck Schumer, supporting gun control in the wake of the recent shooting / murders at her Trainwreck movie.

(43,049 posts)aside from the shock of finding out they are related, having a celebrity and a senator on the same stage has got to work. And being related should work even better.

The comedian and Sen. Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat who is her second cousin once removed, announced a bill to reward states that submit records on felons, spousal abusers and the mentally ill to the federal background check system. It would penalize states that don't.
They also want the Justice Department to survey states and find out which have the best standards for involuntary commitment to mental health facilities, and they want Congress to restore proposed cuts to mental health programs.
"These are not extreme ideas," Amy Schumer said. "No one wants to live in a country where a felon, the mentally ill or other dangerous people can get their hands on a gun with such ease."

(10,164 posts)...is legislation intended to encourage states to get information into the NICS database (used for firearms background checks) in a timely and complete manner. This is an excellent bill...a genuine common-sense measure. Some states are terrible about doing this, which is unacceptable.
She also supports measures to ensure people with certain mental health problems don't have access to firearms...more common sense.

(30,777 posts)I don't understand why all of them don't do it.
She is brave and good. She is really stepping outside her comfort zone, and putting herself on the line.
I don't know what it is going to take. Newtown should have been the tipping point.

(34,185 posts)If she's really smart she'll push to make NICs open to private sellers.

(6,324 posts)Actually proposing meaningful changes that target the problem without hassling those who are not a problem.
Opening NICS to private sellers is long overdue.
They stand a chance of making it happen if they don't start adding on gun bans or measures to force every sale to go through a dealer and pay the dealer a fee.

(29,503 posts)It may or may not make you laugh, but I'm not going to rec a thread started in her honor because I think of her as I thought of Sam Kinison whose routine included AIDS 'jokes'. She may not be QUITE that bad, but she's not one of my favorites.
