I was in Ho Chi Minh City at the time the plane disappeared. The initial indication was that it had gone into the sea before entering Vietnamese airspace. Vietnam put a lot of effort into the search, only to discover later that Malaysia Air personnel knew that the plane had turned back toward Malaysia before entering Vietnamese airspace. The Vietnamese were very upset as they are a poor country and the search efforts had caused them a lot of expense.
