"The purpose of the military is to kill people and break things. It's not to transform the culture by trying out some ideas that some people think would make us a different country and more diverse," Huckabee said at the first Republican presidential debate.
"The purpose of it is that we protect every American," he added.

(13,340 posts)It's been an adage in the military for a couple decades at least. At least a less polite version.. "Kill people and blow shit up."

(13,340 posts)He's right that the military kills people and breaks things. That's actually and adage the GOP needs to understand more. The military is a hammer, and it's excellent for driving in nails. Not so good for screws or bolts. The GOP loves it some hammer, so every problem starts looking like a nail, and we use the military for stuff it is not well suited for.
OTOH, the military has often led society on social issues. Truman integrate the Army, and lo and behold, the world did not come to an end. The U.S. Navy had been integrated long, LONG before that. Remember all the snark about women on combat ships? Yeah... Now it's just how things are. The Navy did not sink.
Huck's stupid assertion about "social experimentation" would actually harm the military in my view. The military works best when it is being innovative, and moving forward IMO.
