Republican Assault on Trump May Only Make Him Stronger

BY MATT TAIBBI August 7, 2015

Last night's debate was the funniest political program in our nation's history. Nothing really comes close.

There have been moments, obviously. Bush ducking a shoe. Admiral Stockdale saying "Who am I? Why am I here?" Sarah Palin being interviewed while a man in the background beheaded turkeys was a classic.

But for comic staying power and sheer WTF factor last night's debate went beyond 11. By my count there were over a dozen genuine laugh-out-loud moments. Mike Huckabee bringing pimps into a presidential debate for the first time ever was a landmark moment. Jeb Bush's attempt at a one-liner, "They call me Veto Corrleone," made millions of adults cringe at the same time. Then there was Megyn Kelly's brain-busting toss to commercial near the end:

KELLY: We have to stand you by, because after the break, we're going to let the candidates make their closing statements, their final thoughts, and… God.

Is it really possible we made it this far in the television era without reaching this point: We'll be right back – with God!

I was laughing so hard at this article that I got thrown out of bed, so now here I am in my office continuing with the reading of the links and the companion pieces, one of which is just as good as the one you posted ("10 Times Hillary Clinton Won the First Debate&quot . I was grasping for pillows to cover my laughter; meanwhile, the cats were having a wrestling match on the floor and engaging in a hissing fest that caused us all to be banished.

It's OK, we all had some great 4 a.m. snacks!

The article makes so many good points that it's hard to highlight any of them, so I will just say that I loved the conclusion, where the writer has a name for Trump that is so perfect, just so perfect: from both a grasp-of-the-situation kind of way, plus, for lovers of literature, an allusion. I shall not be a spoiler.

I knew this event was going to be a classic, a point the author makes in the first part where he summarizes Great Moments in Republican Foolishness, like Sarah Palin talking while a turkey had his head chopped off in the background.

What is it with the cosmos that seems to actively participate in making republicans look like fools?

Consequently, I went to great pains to organize a social gathering of the most acerbic wits in my circle of friends, and enjoy it we did. Good food, sarcasm, lots of laughs. Indeed, if you missed the first repuke debate, it was like missing the opposite of the U.S. going to the moon. This was the event where our adversary truly imploded. How could you deliberately miss this???!!!

But indeed, we have DU-ers who do not appreciate such moments. See this thread, entitled "How Many of You, Like Me, Simply Could Not Watch this Crap?"

This is the silver lining! Yes, we had eight years of total destruction of our economy. A completely unnecessary war, waged for no other reason than to make rich people rich. Many people lost their lives and their homes. Yet at the same time, there was what I will call a "high ridiculousness" about it all--that if you could appreciate that part, made the rest just a little (and only a little) bit more bearable.
