Liberals are livid at Sen. Charles Schumers (D-N.Y.) decision to oppose the White Houses nuclear deal with Iran, and have threatened to launch a full-scale war as retribution.
Activists and former top officials within the Obama administration are openly contemplating whether Schumers stance disqualifies him from serving as the next Senate Democratic leader which he is primed to do and seeking to temporarily cut off money to Democrats in the upper chamber.
Its unclear whether Schumers announcement will have a devastating effect on the White Houses efforts to prevent Democrats from killing the deal when it comes up for a vote in Congress next month.
But its clear that he will be Public Enemy No. 1 for liberal activists throughout the August recess, as they aim to rally support from Democrats on the agreement.
This is a real and serious backlash, one that comes from deep within the Democratic Partys base, and I think were only going to see it grow, said Becky Bond, the political director for Credo Action.
Liberal groups including Credo, MoveOn.org and Democracy for America are rallying supporters to flood congressional mailboxes and town halls over the course of the next month to demand lawmakers support the agreement. On Friday, they launched a new website, 60DaysToStopAWar.com, to list upcoming town halls and aid in the push.

Backstab your president and your party? Kiss your dreams of being Senate Majority Leader good-bye.
New Yorkers overwhelmingly support the president and the Iran peace deal. He's LYING about simply doing what his constituents want, which begs the question of just who it is he's trying to kiss up to... (hint: PNAC and the neo-cons.)
He was always a milque-toast Democrat, just like Lieberman.

(3,967 posts)It's just a vote on a deal. This kind of language and consequent incitement to violence is reminiscent of some very unsavory fringe groups. I don't know if this is considered acceptable at DU, and if so, I apologize in advance for anyone I may offend by criticizing it.

(5,330 posts)Schumer has exposed himself as a warmongering neo-con.
He needs to start representing America's interests, not Israel's.
Israel can take care of itself.

(3,967 posts)there is some (in my view) unfortunate history relating to your call.

(5,330 posts)I truly have no problem with the country or its people, but its current right-wing leadership needs to go.
Would you not agree?

(63,221 posts)I actually like Schumer most of the time. However, I suppose that most of his financial support comes from those who support Israel over the US. I think that would explain his decision.

I'm glad he has the balls to vote against this so called "deal".
The Iranian government is not to be trusted.

(5,330 posts)Hillary or Bernie who whole-heartedly support the deal, as does President Obama, or Jeb or Rubio who oppose it?

Iran is not our enemy. They are the only thing keeping Iraq from completely falling apart right now and succumbing to ISIS.

(1,727 posts)the primary for his seat and then he not only endorsed McCain but also addressed the Republican National Convention. In spite of an unprecedented amount of treason in modern US party politics, he was allowed to keep his seniority and committee assignments within the caucus while continuing to shit on the Democratic party and the President whenever it suited him until he called it quits.
I'll believe Schumer is going to pay a price within the Democratic caucus when I see it.

(12,228 posts)but in this party the obvious is not always enough. Who are the other options by the way? On the Reid scale Schumer is well below.

(15,369 posts)contender but evidently was planning to stand down against Schumer to unify the party.
Reid also endorsed Schumer earlier. But that was before this outright betrayal of the President. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/schumer-durbin-top-contenders-to-replace-reid-as-senate-democrats-leader-2015-03-27
Reid had better "unendorse" him and soon! In fact, I will write to him immediately after this post and request that he do so.
There are certainly much better alternatives than Schumer. Durbin is just one. The link also mentions Patty Murray (WA) and Michael Bennet (CO). But my personal favorite would be Elizabeth Warren. That last would send a signal to the base that Dems are serious about being better than lukewarm.
Schumer needs to be deprogrammed from his current radical RW Israeli leanings. He is serving those masters well. But he is betraying his fellow Americans.
Schumer has already received a message from me expressing my personal wrath - respectfully. Now, I am joining with MoveOn, DFA and others to protest this.
EVERY Dem - not just Schumer - who opposes the Iran Deal had better feel our collective wrath. But Schumer's treason is especially heinous, given his power and standing. He cannot be allowed to get away with this.

Schumer is up for re-election in 2016. There have got to be some REAL Dems in NY that can give this phony Dem a scare at least.

(12,228 posts)who is good or charismatic is ready for the organizing, conciliatory etc. role. But someone who brags about coming out swinging against GOP SCOTUS candidates then folds the tent does not inspire. With his tremendous vote plurality, even though he is solidly a NYC Dem, he doesn't have to do this for a foreign lobby making common cause with GOP trash of the very worst sort.
This is putting a lot of things ahead of sworn allegiances and much better things, so much so he has given up all leadership in those offices and values for the sake of his choice. If he was "forced" what else can we expect in the future? If sincere his judgment is very flawed. If political, then he is strangely alone.
BlueMTexpat
(15,369 posts)signature accomplishment of the Leader of his party that he is neither loyal to that Leader nor to that party.
When a major Dem such as he deliberately chooses to be on the same side as those who led the cry for war in Iraq (and wasn't THAT a great decision ), in spite of all the legal and nuclear experts who support the Iran Deal, he is totally unfit for party leadership.
This is a real and serious backlash, one that comes from deep within the Democratic Partys base, and I think were only going to see it grow, said Becky Bond, the political director for Credo Action.
I totally agree!
