The Absolute Best Way to Reflect on Nixon’s Resignation

On this anniversary, let’s remember one great — but too often overlooked — Lesbian African-American House Representative from Texas who steered us through a Constitutional crisis 41 years ago with logic and passion.

Check out Barbara Jordan‘s brief but prescient remarks to the House Judiciary Committee at the beginning of the Nixon impeachment hearings:

"All The President's Men" for history, followed by "Dick" with Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams for a bit of levity. Pass the popcorn and be glad America was strong enough to say no to that crook.

Very few have served us so well. When people slam Texas (I admit that sometimes I am guilty) we need to remember the absolutely wonderful women Texas has blessed us with. Probably some men too, but I would have to think about that for a while.

Were just part of being an American.

As she spoke of herself not being covered in the Constitution, this was something showing the deep flaws which needed to be changed. So a generation worked and organized and voted to change things for the better.

Conservatives hate the ideal of a living, malleable Constitution that denies them the right to maintain power forever. They don't seek to empower 'All Men' but only a very few, which they believe means them.

My life in TX was inspired by her and people like her, not the venal crooks that run the red states now.

Sad that we find ourselves in nearly the exact same space so many decades later...Except that the Bushes got away with it, and the a lot of the major issues that we needed to address more than 30 years ago were delayed or made worse by a treasonous coup.

Sobering.

Positively Periclean. Just thinking about her speech at the 1976 convention still gives me chills.
