Defense minister hints assassinations may resume, says Israel considering air strikes against nuclear facilitiesBy Adiv Sterman August 7, 2015, 4:58 pm 310
Israel is not responsible for the lives of Iranian nuclear scientists, Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon said in an interview published Friday, making a less-than-veiled threat that covert assassination missions blamed on Israel could resume.
As the world moves closer to ratifying a nuclear deal that Jerusalem says wont keep Iran from obtaining a nuclear arsenal, Yaalon told German newspaper Der Spiegel that Israel would do anything necessary in order to assure Tehran does not get atomic weapons, including taking military action.
Ultimately it is very clear, one way or another, Irans military nuclear program must be stopped, Yaalon said, according to a retranslation from an interview published in the German daily. We will act in any way and are not willing to tolerate a nuclear-armed Iran. We prefer that this be done by means of sanctions, but in the end, Israel should be able to defend itself, the defense minister said.
He added that he was not responsible for the lives of Iranian scientists, according to Der Spiegel, which will publish the full interview on Saturday.
Yaalon further stated that Israel was considering carrying out airstrikes on Iranian military facilities, the German paper reported.

(10,650 posts)Doesn't Iran have a right to defend itself by whatever means to prevent this? Or does that just apply to Israel?
The United States is simply insane to continue backing Israel. They are not an ally. They are not an enemy. They are another country with different objectives that often are to our detriment.

(7,412 posts)Is to destroy Israel. They have the right to make sure Iran doesn't get a nuclear weapon but Iran also has the right to defend themselves.
We should let them all just have at it and get it over with, tired of hearing about it after all these decades.

(10,362 posts)The nuclear facilities in Iran are legal under the new agreement.
Israel at this point is trying to start a war.

What are the odds of that.

(10,362 posts)and murder scientists based upon that assumption, right?
Who else would you propose be murdered? Our scientists? Politicians in countries you don't like?

(39,171 posts)We were taking about whether attacking Iranian facilities would be an act of war.
You're aware that Israel has assassinated Iranian nuclear scientists in the streets using assassins, surely? Then you know that we aren't necessarily talking about bombing nuclear facilities. Hence the whole "assassinations " part in the headline.

(39,171 posts)As for killing scientists working illegal programs I am ambivalent. Iran funding Hamas and Hezbolla means they are already at war with Israel. I would not lose sleep over it.

A real war is not what they want. They saw clearly in Gaza last year that the IDF made serious changes after their last go around in Gaza.

(39,171 posts)It is more likely that they would simply apply more firepower and level southern Lebanon if Hezbollah decides to intervene.

(68,868 posts)"Thank you sir may I have another" then why have there been sanctions and negotiations? What are the Israelis waiting for?

(39,171 posts)Airspace access is a big issue. Any attack would be with the tacit support of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States. Perhaps they want to wait to see how things play out.
It certainly is not because of Hezbollah.
