BATMAN!!! . . . Or, rather, his adversaries . . . .
The reason people love watching Trump is because it reminds them of watching the characters in Batman and elsewhere, especially the over-ripe villains. Figures at their wildest extent in a world where everything is larger than life, strangely wired, color-torqued, and sits somewhere on the slopes of high-camp (esp. the t.v. Batman series).
How long will this appeal last? . . . Not, I feel, to the convention.
And if by happenstance he was nominated, why would people vote for him?
Multiple choice:
How many would vote for him ____?
a. for the entertainment value
b. to watch the narrative of hubris
c. to reinforce their notions of cartoon simplicity
d. as a way of severely striking at the forces they feel complicate the world with thought and pollute it with seriousness and fellow feeling
e. all of the above
Call me idealistic, but I don't think half the country is nuts.

(19,359 posts)I can't remember that clip.
I was in college at the time (1966-1968) and college students watched little television back then (and I think up to a dozen of so years ago). Everyone was too busy finding themselves a almost-adults. Of course there was sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll as well.
I compared the out-landishness of television-Batmen's villains, and my daughter remembered them well: she'd watch re-runs everyday after getting home for grade school. She had experienced them far more significantly than I did, but we both agreed that these characters are the closest popular-culture reflections of Trump. The intuitive "feel" seems to directly correspond.
