Historic District Landmarks Commission recommends removing Confederate monuments (LA)

NEW ORLEANS —The New Orleans Historic District Landmarks Commission voted to recommend the city remove four Confederate monuments.

The first of two public hearings Thursday was conducted by landmarks commission. The hearings center on the Robert E. Lee monument at Lee Circle, the Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard statue at City Park, the Jefferson Davis monument in Mid-City and the Liberty Monument in the CBD.

During the hearing, the commission voted to bring forth its recommendation to remove the four monuments. The decision is not final, just a recommendation to the New Orleans City Council.

The commission's decision came after hearing from both sides of the public whether the statues should stay or be removed. The commission first took comments from supporters of the monuments' removal and then followed with those against their removal ...

... Both the Historic District Landmarks Commission and the Human Relations Commission have now voted to recommend the monuments' removal.

Thursday's votes are just recommendations to the City Council, and more steps are still ahead.

The hearings are part of the 60-day period of discussions and public meetings that Mayor Mitch Landrieu called for last month ...
