UT to move Jefferson Davis statue this weekend

Three of the men, James Stephen Hogg, Albert Sidney Johnston and John Reagan, had “deep ties to Texas” apart from their service to the Confederacy, Fenves said. The fourth, Robert E. Lee, was a major historical figure whose “complicated legacy to Texas and the nation should not be reduced to his role in the Civil War.” Fenves said he would consider installing a plaque to explain the historical context behind the four remaining statues. The Davis statue and one of President Woodrow Wilson together look out over UT’s South Mall lawn. With that symmetry about to be lost, the Wilson statue, too, will be moved to another outdoor location. It is expected to cost tens of thousands of dollars to relocate both bronzes ...
