UNC-Chapel Hill wraps renaming of campus building that had honored a prominent KKK leader

Published August 14, 2015
Associated Press

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina's flagship public university has replaced the name of a campus building that trustees decided nearly a century ago decided should honor a reputed Ku Klux Klan leader ...

Campus trustees voted in May to remove the name of William Saunders from the building.

The Confederate officer and politician was honored in 1920 for helping preserve colonial records. But university trustees 95 years ago also praised Saunders for his post-Civil War leadership of the KKK, a violent white supremacist group that aimed to overthrow elected state governments and reverse rights granted to newly emancipated slaves.
