Peace isn't just something that happens. You have to put effort into it. You have to think about it. Plan for it. Implement it.
I want to hug a Cuban today. I am put into the state of mind of remembering my Cuban friends and classmates when I was in high school in Monterrey, Mexico 50 years ago. They fled Cuba and landed in Mexico and they were welcomed into the multi-national community in Monterrey.
I was there so many years ago, and today, full circle I am here. This isn't just a world historic moment. It's also a historic moment in my personal life.

(53,410 posts)He made it happen in the face of powerful opposition from those who unbelievably fear that tiny island. Even the descendants of the people who fled Cuba are fully American now, with no personal memories of living there, yet giving us of their wonderful culture into the mix that is this country.
It seems some people can't get over the US kick-ass bravado of the Iron Curtain past. They must miss it terribly.

(53,410 posts)and I sincerely hope that once the door of freedom is opened, it's impossible to close it again. I could never understand why tiny little Cuba was such a terrible threat to the US. If it was the "Communist threat" then why are we friendly with Russia? Well, kinda friendly.

(6,719 posts)Would that we could do more of these deliberate acts of peace.

(53,410 posts)I know we can do it. We've done it before, but most people don't see that it has to be deliberate and thoughtful and intelligently pursued objective.

(16,296 posts)and I think it marks the waning influence of the right-wingers in America. Good news, should have happened decades ago.
NOW I want to go down there and PARTAAAY like my late Uncle Tom did back in the 50's-----

(12,022 posts)Americans still have to jump through hoops to go there. US airlines don't fly there. We're still not allowed to spend money there unless we fulfill some special bullshit "category". Why can't we travel like Canadians do?

(53,410 posts)the rest of the normalization on relations happen.
This isn't the first time President Obama has done something that opens the door. Once that happens it's near impossible to close it again, which means that it enables the next steps to happen.
I think he does it with forethought. I imagine he feels that this move will force the next moves along.

I never understood the "China good, Cuba bad" approach to foreign policy that made us look like sulking bullies the world over.
Let's hope the Cuban people can prevent Havana from becoming a gangsters' paradise again.

(55,745 posts)The people of Cuba are good people. Eisenhower's team cough Nixon and Dulles were lame ducks when they broke off diplomatic ties on Jan. 3, 1961.
Something else these BFEE dudes did before leaving office was to see that Patrice Lumumba was history. Africa hasn't been the same since, like Cuba -- until now.
PS: Thank you, lunatica! That phrase, "deliberate act of Peace in Cuba" is something special: an idea worth spreading to all the world.
