The College of William and Mary is removing Confederate battle flag images from a commemorative plaque and the mace to make the college "welcoming to everyone," W&M President W. Taylor Reveley III told the campus community today.
The plaque in the Wren Building, which contains the names of soldiers from the college who fought for the Confederacy, has been moved to special collections in Swem Library "to join other historic artifacts describing William & Marys past," Reveley said in an email message.
It will be replaced with a plaque that gives "as complete an account as research permits of all the William & Mary people who fought on both sides of the Civil War," he said.
The mace, however, is "a living artifact" that will continue to be used in ceremonial events. The Confederate seal will be replaced with new emblems that have yet to be determine but will reflect college history, including the Civil War, he said ...
