Coward Cops
Listening to the highlights of today's testimony in Charlotte on the evening nooz. The cop says he was afraid for his life. He said the unarmed and PERFECTLY INNOCENT young black man posed what he, the cop, thought to be a mortal threat.
So he shot him.
He shot him TEN TIMES.
No evidence of which I am aware ever surfaced that the victim made any threatening moves toward the cop.
When the prosecutor asked the cop about inconsistencies in his initial reports and later retellings, he made his mind set perfectly clear. He told her it should not be a surprise. He was, after all, fresh out of a "fight for his life."
Wut?
It should be crystal clear that so many of these cops killing young men - mostly all black - is based either on the cop feeling invincible and above the law, or scared shitless that the black guy will get him.
But here's the thing. We pay these cops to be our line of defense against bad guys. Not black guys. Bad guys. But we also pay them to have good judgment and to have the courage to handle stressful situations. Not panic and fire at anything. But to handle things properly. That is our basic expectation.
I think a fair bit of all this comes from the professional cop leadership. I think the elected leaders who hire and oversee the cop leaders need to tamp this shit down and tamp it down now.
A thought for cops: The citizenry among whom you walk, who you swore to protect, ARE NOT YOUR ENEMIES.
If some of them don't like you, ask yourself why. Who caused them not to like you? Not to trust you?
Man up or get into another line of work. The last thing we need are cowardly cops. The next to last thing we need are entitled princes; with them, WE would be better off if they got into another line of work.
