Iran cannot be trusted, says U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse.

The Republican lawmaker, who opposes the Iranian nuclear deal, said he believes that Iran’s ultimate goal is to destroy Israel and to assert dominance in the Middle East. Sasse says he doesn’t trust that Iran’s leaders will give up their nuclear ambitions — deal or no deal.

“The leadership of Iran has a specific set of objectives. They believe they have a divine mandate to spread Sharia law and Islamist tyranny,” Sasse said. “They believe in making themselves — making Tehran — the global headquarters of an expansionist jihadi movement.”

Sasse spoke Thursday at a town hall meeting in Bellevue that drew about 170 people. Sasse is holding several such meetings across the state during the August congressional recess, gathering input from constituents and telling them where he stands on the Iranian deal.
