RIP Mr. Farrell - Founder of Farrell's Ice Cream Parlours. ROBERT "BOB" FARRELL 1927-2015

Thanks for the memories. For anyone who's never been there... Birthdays at Farrell's were THE BOMB back in the day. My Mom and Dad still have a ribbon that looks like the button below from one of our trips when I ate "The Trough".

We had lots of birthdays there.

We may have received our draft registration reminders from there as well:

Draft Noticed

Claim: A few years after a couple of kids used a made-up name to sign up for a free yearly ice cream cone, they received a Selective Service registration notice for their non-existent friend.

Status: True.

Origins: In 1984, a Palo Alto, California, family received a Selective Services reminder that it was almost time for Johnny Klomberg to register for the draft. Problem was, there was no Johnny Klomberg living at that address. Or anywhere else. He was purely the fictional invention of the two boys who did live there, Eric and Greg Hentzel.

To remind 18-year-olds to register with the Selective Service, that agency had been tracking down young men through commercial mailing lists. They got caught Ice cream out at this practice when they sent such an invitation to a fictional kid who'd been dreamed up by a couple of young Dillingers whose dad was an ex-Serviceman, a lawyer, and not amused.

I knew it was a place we frequented but couldn't remember the name until now.

That was old school big brother action. Lol. Now they just take it in for free from facebook

I loved Farrell's not only for the ice cream; the servers were unlike any place I'd ever been.

In FL was my first job.
I worked in the dish room, and bussed tables.
I always wanted to work at the fountain, but quit before I got promoted.
It was fun, though.

13. The Trough came in a small wooden trough and when you finished you could put your name on it.

12. All I know of Farrell's is the tragic F-86 Sabrejet crash into the Sacramento store

For decades, like clockwork, the local news people covered the story on the anniversary of the crash. Twenty-two people died that day.

14. Sad. I had never heard of this, or I did and it's a memory I can't pull out of the depths.

I would have been 11 when it happened.

I bet you it broke Mr. Farrell's heart.

Fire sirens, the staff would converge upon your table, and the entire restaurant would join in singing Happy Birthday to you. And you got an impressive free sundae.
