IMHO...He needed Trayvon "there"..
He called 911 and he needed to show he had a real reason for it, lest he be considered the crackpot wanna be cop that he was. He needed to show them there was a reason for the call. A real flesh and blood reason. A real "threat" to the neighborhood.
Trayvon was "getting away". That's why he got out of the truck he was in to pursue on foot what he could not pursue in his truck. A little man's ego gone mad. A fear of not be taken seriously. He just didn't count on getting his ass kicked in by a frightened kid who stood his ground.
