Great-Grandma Delivers Bag Lunches to Feed 200 Needy Kids Every Day

When this great-grandmother found out kids in her county could go hungry over the summer, she decided to feed all 200 of them — every day.

The school district in Gray’s Harbor County, Washington, didn’t have money to provide free or reduced price meals to low income kids over the summer. So Phyllis Shaughnessy, rounded up volunteers, did some fundraising, and got the Green Lantern Tavern to donate kitchen space.

She and her volunteers meet every morning to pack lunches, featuring non-perishable food, and fan out across the county delivering “Green Lantern Lunches.”

Shaughnessy plans to deliver school supplies later this month and keep the food program going on weekends and holidays through the school year. She says she’s delivering more than just a meal.

for those children. It is a disgrace that our children go hungry in this land of plenty, but she is doing an exceptional service to feed as many as she can. Bless her!

This is a shining example of humanity and what America should be about.

I do a very small thing each year...and donate to Toys for Tots.

When the back to school sales start, I have been buying crayons, spiral books of paper and composition books...crayons and spirals go for about 50 cents...I hit a sale this year and got the composition ones for 10 cents...got 50 of each.

I also pick up about a dozen stuffed characters from Kohls (5 bucks each) as well as watch for inexpensive fleece throws at CVS/Rite Aid/Walgreens to go on sale.

It's not much at all for children that haven't got much.
