McCain Chased Off Reservation By Pissed-Off Navajo Activists

Last edited Sun Aug 16, 2015, 03:59 PM - Edit history (1)

In a stunning action that was long overdue, a group of native Navajo Americans chased Senator John McCain out of the Navajo Nation capital of Window Rock — making it perfectly clear he was unwelcome in the first place.

McCain was visiting the Nation in commemoration of Navajo Code Talker’s day, and perhaps for a moment thought he would get by listening to polite pleas from Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye and Vice-President Jonathan Nez to back a Congressional appropriation to fund the construction of a Navajo Code Talkers Museum. According to a report from Native News Online.Net, however, the Nation’s leaders chose the moment to focus on the EPA tragedy unfolding via the Gold King Mine spill into the Animas and San Juan Rivers. ...

and this bit with the EPA fouling the river they depend on really sucks.

It is very revealing of our political system that Sen. McCain was there to commemorate their WWII service as 'code talkers,' when he SHOULD have been there to promise them that he would do everything humanly possible to get massive federal money down there for a cleanup.

See....for McCain, WAR = important, FOULED RIVER = hope it doesn't come up

The good news is that Animas river water has cleared in Durango and that clearing will proceed down to the first dam. They should be able to water their stock, at least, within a few weeks.

They need something to help them survive those weeks. Words about WWII from some old fart who wasn't there won't help.

into the Animas before the EPA goofed up, that's why they were there in the first place.

Once the surface water clears, it will be OK for stock, at the very least.

The problem comes down river where the Colorado is dammed up to form Lake Powel and Lake Mead. That's where the cleanup will be most problematic and will likely take years.

Who exactly is responsible for the incident?

Were the people that let that crap loose government employees or contractors?

I've seen a LOT of stuff contracted out that used to be done by actual government employees. I wonder if this is really a result of "lowest bidder" incompetence.

I heard something partially on Thom Hartmann the other day about contractors being the actual ones doing the work. That opens up a lot of questions about the whole situation.

A law from the 1800s lets mining companies abandon their mines without doing anything to control environmental damage. Leaving it up to the government to deal with.

If the contractor screwed up and spilled the water, the EPA could go after the contractor for failing to follow the contract. (Depending on how exactly the contract was written)

People outside that contractual relationship that were harmed by the spill would be suing the government/EPA, since they are the people responsible for cleaning up such mines.

23. Greedy GOP Hypocrites Sell Sacred Apache Land To Mining Company
Sun Aug 16, 2015, 04:29 PM
Aug 2015

Earlier this week, Washington DC saw two days of demonstrations organized by Apache Stronghold a Native American advocacy group to protest a deal which handed 2400 acres of sacred lands belonging to the San Carlos Apache tribe to foreign mining company, Resolution Copper. The land deal was slipped at the last-minute into the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) last December by Arizona Republican Senators, John McCain and Jeff Flake where it sidestepped most of the usual scrutiny.

in the lurch."

Why is Congress giving federally protected Arizona land sacred to the Apache to a massive mining conglomerate?

(The Details, details).

SUPERIOR, Ariz. – A place of great natural beauty, popular among rock climbers and campers, a part of Tonto National Forest known as Oak Flat has been under federal protection from mining since 1955, by special order of President Eisenhower.
snip---
Year after year the bills failed to pass. But in December, the legislation was was quietly passed into law as part of the 2015 National Defense Authorization Act. Arizona Sen. John McCain, who has long championed the deal, said the land exchange would “maintain the strength of the most technologically advanced military in the world” since copper is the second-most-utilized mineral by the Department of Defense.

As part of the deal, Resolution Copper will swap roughly 7.8 square miles of land scattered across Arizona for roughly 3.8 square miles of Tonto National Forest, which includes Oak Flat. The new legislation will open up Oak Flat for copper mining.

But critics say the move allows the company to privatize the land and make an end run around critical environmental and cultural protections. What’s more Resolution Copper can’t promise that any of the copper produced by the mine will remain in the United States – which raises the question: How does this help national defense?

it was public land, and the Tribe still uses the land. It is ancestral Apache land, (and yes, it was stolen from them, just not recently) and McCain and Flake sold it out from under them in bad faith.

Democratic Representative Raul Grijalva:

“Congress shouldn’t be in the business of helping big corporations at others’ expense, and it certainly shouldn’t break faith with Native American communities. I’m proud to lead our bipartisan team in saying we should repeal this giveaway and stop treating corporate handouts as national defense priorities.”

But yes, technically, in lawyer world, the Apache did not "own" the land at the time this dirty deal by McCain and Flake went down.

I very much doubt that group was going to kill anyone. The police did not really contain them and no one died. They caught up to McCain and no one died. They wanted to confront him.

There were about 50 NN Police, as well as County Police. Protesters took off in cars and followed McCain to the airport. The bridge to the airport was closed off.

“Bye John McCain! There are a lot of things on the Navajo Nation that our groups large and small are going to tackle. We cannot trust our Government, so we will make things right, ourselves.”
