State Representative Todd Courser has been embattled in a national scandal ever since news broke that he tried to diffuse a marital affair by concocting a story that he was sleeping with a male prostitute in hope that when the truth of his affair came to light the scandal would seem trivial.
Now Courser has taken to Facebook to ask for the publics forgiveness, explaining that Jesus died for his sins, and thus if Jesus can forgive, the public obviously should forgive.

I KNEW he'd take the je-heezus forgave me route! Being a Republican means you never have to apologize.

(18,318 posts)him/her to go and sin no more. His forgiveness didn't imply anything else, and didn't pro forma insulate him from the social opprobrium he might face from others. Sort of like "blessed are the peace-makers" did not imply how the peace was obtained; hence, the naming of a firearm "Peacemaker."
So, if the zipless wonder of a legislator thinks Jesus' forgiveness entitles him to carry on as if nothing else need be said, or any other consequence should not be expected, he has another thing coming.

(13,877 posts)Jesus said there was only one sin for which a spouse could divorce...and that was adultery.
Not that I, divorced myself, believe that, but when you're using the Good Book and Jesus Saves/Forgives for cover, you'd better know what else it says.
Said Book/Jesus doesn't actually refer to faking a gay relationship to cover it up, but this is the New Age. Then again, lying is frowned upon, as well.
No matter what, he's definitely in a Lot of Trouble.

(12,151 posts)Another data point in the growing body of evidence that people who shout religion as their authority for crushing others (Courser was a huge anti-gay marriage advocate) generally have some kind of creepy box of weird in the back of the closet.
Could have been just an affair, sure. Happens all the time. But not for this guy. Nooooo. His first thought was to make up a tawdry, back-alley gay sex scandal about himself in order to detract from the actual affair.
Because that makes perfect sense and will totally fool everyone and is totally not something a crazy person would come up with.
Courser, a married father of four, had an aide create and distribute an anonymous email stating that Courser was caught behind a Lansing nightclub having sex with a man. Courser was actually having an affair with fellow Tea Party lawmaker, state Rep. Cindy Gamrat. The lawmakers reportedly used their taxpayer-funded offices to maintain and hide their affair.
They are described as socially conservative legislators who often invoke their Christian faith in pursuit of new legislation governing gun rights, abortion, and marriage. An audio recording revealed Courser saying the email is intended to be a complete smear campaign and should make the actual affair look mild by comparison. Michigan House Speaker will ask the nonpartisan House Business Office to determine whether there was a violation of House rule or any evidence of illegal behavior.

(12,151 posts)It so often seems the case that people obsessed with other people's sex lives are coming from a terror of the sexual fantasies scuttling about their own repressed brains.
I would sooner leave a child or a small animal with a convicted felon (non violent) than with a religious zealot.

(12,151 posts)... they have something to hide, is my experience.
I've known plenty of decent people of faith, and crusading against who other people sleep with or who can adopt, or how women handle their bodily needs is not at the top of their agenda.
There is a look to the creepy ones. Flawless helmet hair and a vacant expression. A queer eagerness to dive into the perverted.
Mike Huckabee, volunteering that had transgender people been tolerated in his day, he'd have walked into the girls' showers to leer.
Their dark desires are never closer to the surface then when they're railing about the supposed sins of others.
