(5,610 posts)I was hired to go there, along with a lot of other Union carpenters (by business interests) to rebuild. This was shortly after Katrina. It was like a war zone. We worked 6-12 hour days. On Sundays, a few of us volunteered to help the people who couldn't afford help. That is where my career ended. My heart "blew-up" but after a few months and 4 surgeries, the company sent me back to supervise the end of the contract. I met some wonderful people there.
When I left, the ninth ward and many places were still devastated. The gentrification was sickening.

(30,058 posts)I was not prepared for what I found. For the whiners who thinks everybody ther got rich from government handouts don't have a clue. This was a terrible storm.

That said I don't think the documentaries prepare you for what's on the ground.
