I've got a number of friends who are "anchor babies" and they're all exemplary citizens

They work hard, pay their taxes, hold professional jobs, and make our community a better place. Until very recently, the phrase 'anchor baby' wasn't even controversial or demeaning--people whose parents planned to visit America so they could have their children here frequently call themselves anchor babies. I personally know adult anchor babies from Colombia, Lebanon, and Palestine. They generally have accepted the phrase being used by me. Of course, I expect that will start to change now, now that the idea is mostly being talked about by hate-filled people. We'll have to start saying something less colorful like "first generation Americans" and quit pretending that we can read the minds of someone else's parents. I hate how haters end up defining our language and our ability to talk about a beautiful and uniquely American phenomenon like people saying this land, above all others in the world, is the place where they want their children to pursue their dreams and fulfill their God-given potential.

The same people who made Jesus an icon of intolerance and selfishness are now trying to make "baby" a dirty word and being "anchored" an ugly concept. The war on immigration is really a war on the traditional values of American culture.

Nicely said, Bucky. Your liberal attitude towards immigrants is refreshing after being exposed to so much anti-immigrant sentiment coming from the Donald and all the other republican candidates.

His ancestors were Southwestern (now U.S.A.) Native Americans who had fled to Mexico, just ahead of the U.S. Army.

A couple of generations later his parents returned as Mexican farm laborers and he was born in a tent near a small postage-stamp sized farm my parents later owned.

Not fond of guns, my father-in-law became a medic and missed service in Korea by weird luck of the draw for other dangerous duty, as a guinea pig in above-ground nuclear weapons testing, witnessing one test up close and personal from a hole in the ground near ground zero.

In his eighties now, it seems my father-in-law escaped damage from marching through still burning radioactive wastelands, overturned and tumbled tanks, trucks, and jeeps and stuff, crushed model buildings and burning trees, but many of his fellow guinea pigs were not so lucky.

I'm very Catholic in this regard. Babies are babies, wherever they are born. I don't recall my little baby soul choosing to be born white in Los Angeles.
