I am not wealthy by a long shot.
Retired, on S/S, etc.
74 year old geezer barely hanging on financially.
But I have a couple of friends who are wealthy.
Today we were having lunch and one guy said "He's got "fuck you money."
That's it!
He has enough money that he doesn't have to care about win or lose.
He doesn't care about what you think or what you do.
He has the bucks to just say "Fuck You!"
New Day in America.

(13,775 posts)Read the book "It Can't Happen Here" by Sinclair Lewis. What he describes is what I think a Trump presidency would be.

"It Can't Happen Here is a semi-satirical 1935 political novel by American author Sinclair Lewis. Published during the rise of fascism in Europe, the novel describes the rise of Berzelius "Buzz" Windrip, a populist United States Senator who is elected to the presidency after promising drastic economic and social reforms while promoting a return to patriotism and traditional values. After his election, Windrip takes complete control of the government and imposes a plutocratic/totalitarian rule with the help of a ruthless paramilitary force, in the manner of Adolf Hitler and the SS. The novel's plot centers on journalist Doremus Jessup's opposition to the new regime and his subsequent struggle against it as part of a liberal rebellion."

(3,447 posts)Hopefully he'll be the loudmouth who shatters, permanently, the current Media Model so we can get on with fixing a few things around here.
I hope he wrecks them all into eternal obsolescence. For this one purpose and one purpose alone...Go Donald. The Media has been the enemy of the people for more years than I can count.
As for the rest...I maintain he has no intents to finish the race (although I am beginning to doubt that...) but even if he did, he doesn't have the support to do all the crazy things people think he will. Perhaps a better question would be "Why do things seem bad enough that we believe he could be elected AND do all those things many are afraid of?" It wasn't this bad 10 years ago...so what happened?
Because if THAT question isn't answered, it won't matter if Trump loses, drops out, or simply vanishes; it'll just mean we wait for the next populist to rise from that direction, even more powerful than the last, and then we WILL be facing some horrible times.

(2,003 posts)Trump's rise in the polls is worth paying attention to. It was most certainly not expected but now that it is happening, it seems so obvious. It is really one of the most interesting political events I've witnessed in my 46 years. And it is scary. Scary because as much as I wish I could dismiss him as another occupant of the clown car, he really isn't. He's different from the rest.
He's a fascist in a nice suit. But he's not new. We've known Donald Trump for 30 years. And what he's saying is resonating with millions of Americans.
He's also tearing apart the Republican party. Believe me, as much as DU loathes him, Jeb Bush, Karl Rove, Scott Walker and Marco Rubio loath him even more. At one point this is good. Say what you will about Trump, he's no Jesus freak. He's no Bible thumper. He's not about ending abortion now and guns for everyone. He probably has gay friends.
But he's also a fascist. He might not be sputtering into the microphone, face red with rage, but listen to what he's saying. He's gone past using dog whistles and code words. He's speaking bluntly and people are nodding their heads in agreement. And they're liking what they're hearing. "I'm for Trump. He says what he means!" He speaks his mind!" says the 30-year old unemployed white male, the 76 year old grandmother, and the urban black aspiring rapper who name-drops Trump in his rhymes.
We've heard this before.
I'd like to say, let's laugh at Donald Trump. Let's hope he's the nominee. Let's watch the Republicans lose an election reminiscent of Barry Goldwater in '64. It'll be a bunch of "ha-ha's" when it's over.
But I'm not entirely confident.
