An Ohio zoo that has the last Sumatran rhino living outside of Southeast Asia this week announced plans to send the endangered species to the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary in the Way Kambas National Park of Indonesia.
Harapan, who was born in captivity at the Cincinnati zoo, is mature enough to mate, zoo officials said at a news conference. And since the species is critically endangered, its important that he gets the opportunity to breed.
As Care2′s Jessica Ramos wrote, a new study has revealed that the Sumatran rhinoceros is extinct in Malaysias wild, and the only hope for Sumatran rhinos is the less than 100 individuals roaming free in Indonesia and nine rhinos in captivity.
Officials at the zoo say the eight-year-old rhino will soon be on his way to Indonesia.
