It's a straight up question to which you can answer "Yes," "No," or "Cannot be determined from this example." It does not propose that only one or the other is correct. That would be a false dichotomy.

However, your counter-examples are ill-fitting:

Are knives, cars, alcohol, sports, cigarettes, etc more important than people's lives?
It is commonly pointed out that the number of gun-murders is statistically insignificant compared to the number of guns in the US. Fair enough, but the number of knives owned in the US vastly dwarfs the number of guns in the US, so the number of knife-murders is statistically even less significant.

And how many murders are carried out by cars annually? By alcohol By sports? By cigarettes?

You're formulating a false comparison by comparing the number of gun-murders to the number of deaths that we can associate in some way with those other causes you list. We can certainly discuss those in another thread, but they are out of place in a discussion of gun-murder.

But I thought that you were only banned from purchasing a firearm if you have certain types of convictions, including felony convictions (admit that I could be completely wrong). Did this guy have any felony convictions? And did he purchase the gun legally and pass a background check?
