GILBERT, N.Y. --
Officials have announced they are charging a mom who left her baby in a shopping cart on Monday.

The Gilbert, Ariz., Police Department said Cherish Peterson will be charged with a class one misdemeanor.

On Aug. 24, employees at Super Cuts at Higley and Pecos roads said a woman came into their store asking if a baby left outside belonged to one of their clients. It's unknown how long the baby was left unattended before employees went to get the child inside.

left their youngest daughter in a restaurant and drove away (she was a baby and this was the 1970s). She was one of four children. They quickly returned for her, but it can happen in the best of families even when both parents are present. Unless you have other examples of neglect, charging the mother is ridiculous.

about a mother of three who forgot her baby was in the car and the baby died from the heat.

Yes, it is absolutely horrific, but anyone who has been a parent can tell at least one brain lapse story. In the vast majority of cases no harm happens, but unfortunately sometimes horrible results occur. But some posters on DU think these parents, who have to live with the preventable death of their own child for the rest of their lives, should be in prison. I just shake my head sometimes.

Contrast with the following story.

Everybody going about God's will and absolving the responsible parents. Contrast also with a desperate family whose home burned down that had to stay with family members where one of the family did some low level drug deals (if that was even proven). They were blamed when the cops fired a flash bang into the crib grievously wounding their baby.
