Fred: A Rare Hurricane for Cape Verde Islands

The last time a hurricane was in the Cape Verde Islands, John F. Kennedy was the President of the United States…1961. The time before that Benjamin Harrison was in the White House…1892. The ten islands that make up the Cape Verdes are located very close to a hurricane breeding ground, but you may find it a little surprising that the island country off the coast of West Africa doesn’t get many hurricanes.

“Fred” is expected to move across the Cape Verde Islands early Monday morning, possibly as a hurricane. At 8pm Sunday, Tropical Storm Fred had winds of 70mph. A storm is considered a hurricane when it has sustained winds of 74mph or stronger.
