From an email Barack sent to me today ...... he might have sent it to a "few" more people too.

On the flight in, I had a great view of one of Alaska's most beautiful sights -- Denali.
It's a new and ancient name all at once. In fact, just today, we renamed Mount McKinley, the tallest mountain in North America, by restoring its native name: Denali, which means "the high one."
Alaskans are already living with the effects of climate change.
More frequent and extensive wildfires. Bigger storm surges as sea ice melts faster. Some of the swiftest shoreline erosion in the world -- in some places, more than three feet a year. Alaska's glaciers are melting faster, too -- threatening coastal communities, tourism and adding to rising seas.
Climate change is already affecting the salmon stock that generations of Natives have relied on as an integral part of their lives. So my Administration is taking new action to make sure Alaska Natives have direct input into the management of Chinook salmon stocks. They've taken care of the salmon population for centuries and there's no reason they shouldn't now.

I know he hasn't done everything I have wanted him to do and some of that has to do w/
the non stop obstructionism has has had to deal with and what he sees as the realities of the
world but w/out a doubt he is the President of my lifetime.

(2,529 posts)who started immediately ranting about how Obama over stepped his authority by giving mt McKinley a new name. I really enjoyed explaining to her (she is VERY right wing) about the history behind the name Denali. She actually understood and accepted it. There is hope I guess. So little time, so many ignerent people.
"So little time, so many ignorant people".. .perfect. Thanks for your heroic educational efforts.

(631 posts)I doubt it, but if climate change has such an impact upon people's lives and livelihoods in Alaska how can they continue to vote for a party that denies climate change even exists?

(46,436 posts)when Alaska first became a state, it was one of the bluest in the nation, with a very progressive constitution. It was only with the Pipeline and influx of Texans and other oilies that our politics changed.

Alaska renamed the mountain Denali back in 1975. This is symbolic of what? It doesn't prevent the warming and destruction of fishing and hunting grounds. Obama just approved exploratory drilling by Shell in the Arctic with a 75% chance of a spill that can not be cleaned up or controlled. He also is funding a new coast guard station that will be used to support drilling for oil in the Chugiak Sea.
Having lived in Alaska, I can say this gesture of Obama's means nothing to them.
The Federal Gov received $2 billion from Shell to explore Chugiak sea for oil. In return the native Alaskan villagers get $34 million dollar sea wall to temporarily postpone moving village due to global warming and rising sea level.

(70,559 posts)BTW Obama poked the right wing with a sharp stick when he
went to Africa and then visited Kenya and talked about a "third term."

(19,566 posts)What's the best about what he said is, I don't doubt if he could run for a third term he would win.
No matter what the Republicans say about him.
No matter what his detractors on the left say.
We have by a true majority in this country appreciated him as our president. He's really that badass! Love the pic BTW!
