SEP 14, 2015 David Kirby has been a professional journalist for 25 years. His third book, Death at Seaworld, was published in 2012.

The environmental group Greenpeace has accused the Taiwanese government of trying to cover up illegal fishing in the Pacific Ocean.

Crew members of a Greenpeace ship, the Rainbow Warrior, encountered the Taiwanese tuna ship Shuen De Ching No. 888 on Wednesday in open ocean near Papua New Guinea. As it approached, the Greenpeace crew identified the vessel and contacted authorities from the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission, who confirmed that it was not authorized to fish in the region.
The crew then gained permission to board the tuna ship, said John Hocevar, oceans campaign director for Greenpeace USA.

“We were on board for a couple of hours, and it wasn’t until the last door that we found shark fins,” Hocevar said. The activists discovered some 165 pounds of shark fins from at least 42 sharks, he said.
