ESPNW: Ronda Rousey Voted Geatest Female Athlete Of All Time

Ronda Rousey is the greatest female athlete of all-time and ESPNW has the numbers to back it up. Sure, those numbers are from Internet bracket voting, but that’s pretty damn scientific. Just an FYI – there’s no recency bias. The W stands for Women, not Who’s Now? Rousey’s path to glory included wins over Missy Franklin, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Diana Taurasi, Florence Griffith-Joyner and Serena Williams. Here’s the methodology used to select the field of 32:

We had some fun — because what else could it be but fun to compare athletes from different eras (short shorts versus long shorts) and different sports (frontside 1080 versus 14-second armbar)? — and named eight seeds and drew the rest of the slots.

What does “drew” slots mean? Apparently, a random character generator pulled the greatest female athlete of all-time’s name out of a virtual hat. Pretty lucky actually. This just goes to show that no matter who your target audience is, brackets aren’t just for March anymore. Thanks ESPNW! Ronda Rousey takes on 3 judo guys on Japanese Game Show

Mike Tyson was the greatest ever until Buster Douglas figured him out.

Inside and out of the ring, Paige Vanzant may pass her some day.

But I don't think anybody would say that Buster Douglas is one of the best boxers of all time, and I don't think anybody would rank Buster Douglass above Mike Tyson.

Seems like her sport doesn't have a lot of high level competitors who can really test her.

Give me someone like Serena, who has battled against top competition. Or hell, some of the other Olympians who have won multiple gold medals over several olympics.

Serena Williams
Abby Wambach
Hope Solo

There's a list of people in line in front of her.

Don't get me wrong. She is a great fighter. And that's athletic. But the greatest? No yet.

Ronda's impressive as hell, but many names have already been mentioned in this thread who are more deserving.

It is very possible she might eventually be the greatest athlete of all time, but she's not there yet.

Not to take anything away from her skills, but who has she beaten? Ronda should actually face some competition before receiving that award.

Even though her career has been relatively short, her displays are more dominant than anyone I've seen since Tyson. Like Tyson's early years, it's not a matter of whether she wins, it's how long her opponent can withstand the onslaught.

Women don't even last a full minute against her. It's one thing to dominate a sport, it's another to make a sport uncompetitive by overwhelming superiority. Rousey is the latter.
