considering they are used by people of all sexual orientations, who don't want to get married for a variety of reasons.

There are still 28 states which can fire people for being gay...legally, and there are even more which do not protect LGBT people in regards to housing. Marriage, unlike DP, is state and federally recognized, and as such a matter of public record, which, in turn, could create other problems for those LGBT people. Oklahoma is one such state. Though we chose to get married, if I had a job and my employer read the local newspaper, realized I married another man, I could have been fired on the spot with no legal recourse. If we were renting a home, we could be tossed out - legally - again, with no recourse. In states where full and total equality for GLBT is not at issue, then getting rid of DP isn't as much as in issue, though it still can be for other reasons.
