4 SCOTUS justices, including 3/6 Catholics, to attend Pope's address to Congress.

Last edited Thu Sep 24, 2015, 09:34 AM - Edit history (4)

The TV report didn't mention which justices are boycotting the speech, other than to say they are conservative.

I'm guessing Scalia, Thomas, and Alito?

I guess they think Pope Francis isn't a good enough Catholic.

Update: Only 3 of the 6 Catholics attended the mass today: Roberts, Kennedy, and Sotomayor.

THURS. UPDATE:

WA Post says 3 of 6 Catholic Justices will attend, plus one other unnamed Justice.

In speaking before Congress, the pope was to take the central position in a tableau reflecting a wholesale shift in Catholics’ place in the United States. Vice President Joe Biden (D), who is also Catholic, will sit behind him, next to Boehner. In front of him will be four justices of the Supreme Court — including three of the six Catholics who currently sit on the nine-member court.

When he slams LGBT rights and choice in that Congress that will be politics and many here on DU will have endorsed it in advance.

I think he's doing exactly that merely by showing up, but count on something tailored for applause lines.

I knew a lot of people calling themselves "Christians" are just co-opting religion to try to sanctify their unchristian, self-serving agenda, but I had no idea a member of SCOTUS would stoop so low. Kinda scary really.
