GOPer Caught On Tape Explaining How She値l Redistrict Black Democratic Colleague Out Of Office

GOPer Caught On Tape Explaining How She’ll Redistrict Black Democratic Colleague Out Of Office (AUDIO)
Author: Jameson Parker September 23, 2015
http://www.addictinginfo.org/2015/09/23/goper-caught-on-tape-explaining-how-shell-redistrict-black-democratic-colleague-out-of-office-audio/

For years now, people have been noticing that to win elections, Republicans haven’t just bent the rules, they seem to have abandoned the “democracy” game altogether. Apparently unable to win elections fair-and-square, conservatives have increasingly relied on “redistricting” areas that they would have no chance of winning into more favorable seats. And while the practice should be considered an affront to the very idea of an open democracy, it has apparently become so commonplace for lawmakers that one was just caught on tape dryly explaining how she planned to use the technique to defeat her African-American Democratic colleague.

Rep. Janet Adkins was at a private gathering during a meeting of the Republican Party of Florida. Rather than focus on things like plugging the numerous holes in the Republican sinking ship, Adkins was hatching a plan to steal the election instead. According to tapes secretly recorded and leaked to POLITICO, Adkins wanted to kick long-time liberal congresswoman Corrine Brown out of office by carefully redrawing her district to include as many prisons as possible. Prisoners, you may recall, cannot vote. But first, she made everyone swear that there were no reporters in the room that would rat on her.

“Let me give you inside ball game. Are there any reporters in here?” she said. “Any reporters? OK. So, inside ball game.”

Before saying:

“You draw [Brown’s seat] in such a fashion so perhaps, a majority, or maybe not a majority, but a number of them will live in the prisons, thereby not being able to vote,” said Adkins, a Nassau County Republican, referring to black residents.

Adkins concluded by saying the fact that so many minorities are in prisons where they are listed in the census but aren’t actually allowed to vote is the “perfect storm” to beating a Democrat if the district was redrawn just so.

First, the headline is inaccurate. They are NOT colleagues. Rep. Janet Adkins is in the Fl House, Rep. Corrine Brown is in the US House.
Secondly, Rep. Brown colloberated with Fl GOP in gerrymandering her district in order to carve herself out a safe seat. Her hands are not clean, it's the most gerrymandered US Congresssional District in Florida. As a result, it gave safe seats to GOP in neighboring Districts that otherwise would be more competitive. Rep Brown was self-serving, not trying to make FL's districts more fair to Democrats.

Already in TB area some Republican incumbents are filing for other offices, as they see the writing on the wall in their redrawn districts.

Sep 2015

This is the state where Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, DINO head of the DNC, both campaigned for GOP buddies, and sat out and refused to campaign for Dems because they were running against her GOP buddies.

The Democratic party reeks of self-serving Third Way, down here. And with Debbie deciding who gets support and who does not (she works very closely with the Florida Democratic party), that old admonition to elect progressives is pretty much useless, except at a very local level. Debbie is now pushing a guy for Rubio's seat who was not even a Democrat until about 2012, and only switched so he could run against the GOP incumbent. And the Florida progressive Caucus was threatened with disbandment or something when they objected to this guy and wanted a Progressive to run. That's what Florida is like now. DINO country.

Regardless, the redistricting is no longer in the hands of the Fla Legislature. They have failed several times. It's now in the Courts hands to redraw the districts.

this to DUers for a long time. This is precisely the reason Dr. Guinier was not able to become AG under Clinton when he was forced to back down from her appointment to appease the RW pols. (Never quite forgave him for this move). This relation between prisoners and the census is the primary reason that so many red states and red jurisdictions fight to have prisons built within their districts.

Prisoners count as residents for census purposes thereby entitling more Congressional representation for those districts BUT the prisoners are not allowed to vote. Blue districts and states have lost representation as prisons have been moved and built outside those districts. It is amazing how politically ignorant American voters are about what is going on around them. And the media does a good job of not exposing so many of these ploys. We are lucky to be no worse off than we are, America.

Sat Sep 26, 2015, 07:44 PM

In Michigan, on the tea party surge in 2010, the GOP gained control of congress, and gerrymandered this state, using sophisticated software, to the point where it is now not possible for the Democrats to get a majority in either state chamber. And Democrats are a majority here, voting for Obama both times, and we have two Democratic Senators - the only seats the Repiblicans couldn't gerrymander away. There should be a law against this. Minority rule is the opposite of democracy.
