(115,735 posts)The choir is terrible, full of screechy sopranos. They just performed (badly) a really dumb, schmaltzy arrangement with lots of brass flourishes, of what is actually a German Christmas carol, O Du Froehliche, sung in Latin (I assume it's not a Christmas text). You'd think if the Pope is coming to your church to do a nationally-televised mass, you'd find a way to come up with some better music.

(918 posts)but I assume it's because they have determined that people want to watch.
Here in NYC everyone I know has been watching all day.
The Pope's visit to Our Lady Queen of Angels School in East Harlem was an inspiring event. His rapport with children is extraordinary.
BTW: My father attended OLQA back in the 1920s. He was glued to the screen with tears in his eyes. My only regret is that I didn't bring him there in person, but he's 93 and the logistics were daunting.

I wonder how high the percentage of pedos are in that building compared to the general population.

(72,790 posts)And many folks think it's a big deal, and these news folks think folks will watch it.
You're free to change the channel. Or play outside. Or read a book. Or play tennis. Or jog. Or eat. Or sleep.
Your choice.

(115,735 posts)A lot of people are interested in the Pope's visit, so the media will cover it. Those who are not interested can do something else.

(45,319 posts)That's why the Pope is here, that's the event being promoted. No LGBT voices allowed. Media loves it, he's much more likable than Huckabee or Kim Davis.

(15,036 posts)That should give you an idea of how to deal with much of the unpleasantness you may encounter in life: Look away.
There is so much beauty and joy in life, so much to see and do on this planet, that there's no discernible reason you need subject yourself to any distastefulness that's voluntary.
Read a poem. Go outside. Head on down to the local frozen yogurt shop and pick up a double. Say nope to the Pope if he's a bother on this beautiful Fall day.

(111,277 posts)although TCM's new programmer is getting me thinking more about switching over to a Roku box and Netflix. He sucks.
On broadcast TV, it's either the damn mass or kiddie crapola, it's Saturday morning and adult fare is hard to find. Adults are all supposed to be off doing the week's shopping and errands while the kiddies are supervised by the electronic babysitter.

(23,156 posts)the news channels are terrified of covering anything else, for fear it will make them look bad in some way.
That's why we get wall to wall coverage of such things as a slow moving white Bronco, or the death of a has-been pop star. Once one jumps on the story, they all do. There is almost no willingness to cover real news of any kind.
Personally, I think a Papal mass could be covered by the Catholic Channel (surely there is such a thing?) and the rest of the networks could at least to pretend to cover real news.

(7,670 posts)Just a sample:
Bishop Barron:
Deacon Burke-Sivers:
http://www.ewtn.com/series/shows/authentically-free-at-last/episodes.asp
List of episodes, look at the subject matter and content.
Oh, and his blog:
http://deaconharold.com/the-truth-in-love/
Also on his website, he has an entire section devoted to "Pro-Life".
Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/religion/11457842/Cardinal-Churchs-severe-stance-towards-gay-or-divorced-Catholics-left-people-branded.html
Actually doesn't sound too bad until the end of the article, when he just erases the goodwill he'd like to trick people into thinking he has.
Professor Helen Alvare:

She's just a good old fashioned, can I say bigot? I was told that Catholics such as her can't be bigots. Even worse, one with a law degree.
Dr. Greg and Lisa Popcak:

http://www.patheos.com/blogs/faithonthecouch/2013/03/dear-dr-greg-dont-be-a-bigot-letter-from-a-child-of-a-gay-father/
Linked to their? own blog, because why not? Hoisted on his own petard and all that. Greg is one of those "what about the children!" alarmists. Even worse, they are both apparently licensed therapists of some sort.
On Dr. Scott Hahn, I have no direct links, googled him, found some general articles, but some go to broken links because some websites are redoing stuff. From the titles, I gather he's in line with Orthodox Catholic teaching on marriage.
I really would like more exposure of people such as those above, shine a light on their darkness, particularly when they speak about marriage and family.
We cannot confine are definition of bigotry or homophobia for the likes of people like Pastor Manning. He's an easy target, like the Westboro Baptist Church. What we should be concerned about are those who decorate their ideas with a façade of reasonableness or even acceptance, but still has the same ugliness and bigotry is present, even if not quite as extreme.
