As the sheriff in Douglas County, Oregon, John Hanlin was front and center following Thursday's shooting at Umpqua Community College, which left at least 13 people dead and 20 others wounded.
Two years ago, Hanlin was one of hundreds of sheriffs around the country to vow to stand against new gun control legislation. In a January 15, 2013, letter to Vice President Joe Biden, he wrote, "Gun control is NOT the answer to preventing heinous crimes like school shootings."

(39,319 posts)instead of gracefully stepping back - that would have been more appropriate considering his position.
He was unpleasant at the press conference, guilty conscience much?
Bettie
(16,120 posts)He probably feels very satisfied that no gun regulations are enforced in his jurisdiction.
Yeah, there are people who are dead, but who cares, the guns are safe.

(16,120 posts)my brother is one of these.
His point today was that these people died "because they were too much of pussies to have a gun and kill the MF'er" (excuse the language, but this was what he said. He's also stocking up on "ammo" and getting some new guns, just in case. Pretty mad at Obama for speaking out against it all too.
After Sandy Hook, he also said that little dead kids are just the price we pay for living in a "free society". He is fully unteachable...and a giant asshole.
My mother gets angry with me because I won't talk to him most of the time. I have no idea how his posts became unhidden, I think it was when our mother was in the hospital.

(39,319 posts)I really want to believe deep down they know what's right and wrong, but if they listen to gun nut talk it will harden them further. The NRA is good at keeping the flock brainwashed.
Bettie
(16,120 posts)I don't bother talking to him at all. He's really kind of a horrible person all around.

(2,805 posts)But terrible in a lot of ways. I know if I asked him for the shirt of his back he would give it to me.
But to hear him speak, he is so angry--The gays, the blacks, the welfare people, any poor people--Oh my Gawd! He just sounds terrible. He really is a nice guy but right-wing radio is what he sounds like when you talk to him. And not just talking points but he is really vehement about them and uses a lot of energy to express those points. I just don't understand the anger. Everyday? It is just not worth the trouble to be that angry.
Bettie
(16,120 posts)because I suggested to him that having to press 1 for English on the ATM isn't tragic and in fact, if it is the biggest issue in your life, you're doing pretty well overall.
Yeah, he is angry all the time, spends so much time hating people he doesn't even know.

Not a mention, except in passing, a nicely barnacled reference to "heinous crimes".
Not the faintest breath of thought, not the slightest hint of comprehension that something foully horrible and nearly beyond understanding, had just happened.
No, just "I" (he refers to himself as "I" eleven times). "My" shows up five times, and "me" once. My job. My office. My job. My responsibilities. My freedom. And on and on and on.

(19,537 posts)They interviewed a vet on local news here who said he was armed on the other side of the campus. Had he been closer to the shooting, it sounds like he might have tried to intervene, but at least he was wise not to try and insert himself in to the mix and make it a worse situation than it already was with SWAT shooting at him and others if he came there with his gun.
Makes you wonder if he had a gun, how perhaps the gunman might have also been "blessed" in carrying a gun (or guns) on campus as well. Perhaps why they are avoid talking very much now too, if there is evidence that authorities might have known he was armed, and that allowing him to carry a gun might have been the pivotal event that lead to this massacre that might not have happened if perhaps there was a real "gun safe zone" enforced there.

(160,598 posts)settling scores against people he sees as bad to his interests, we wouldn't need cops any longer. Everyone would already BE a cop.
John Hanlin doesn't seem perturbed, to regret people's lives have been destroyed, their loved ones will suffer a very long time, people who were shot, not killed, will suffer horrifically, and needlessly, because another monster got his hands on a gun.
Everyone's worse off, the whole world is worse off after this, except for gun humpers, who are charged up, ready to fight even harder with anyone who says the world could do without their psycho-sexual attachments just fine.

Like the female student interviewed. She saw her teacher shot in the head in front of her. How do you ever get over a thing like that?

(13,081 posts)I just read her some of the highlights of the letter. My kid is relatively well informed, but she doesn't remember Newtown. She says all the mass shootings have blurred together at this point.
That's pretty sad in and of itself -- that for many younger people, mass shootings really are the "new normal."

(3,194 posts)Let's wait to talk about stupid, pointless stuff like gun control. Maybe in a couple of weeks, after the next shooting.
But then....it will again be too soon for a discussion. Maybe a few weeks more, after the NEXT shooting.
Rinse & Repeat.

(14,112 posts)and I'd bet it won't change any minds in Roseburg either. This is the kind of guy they elect. Don't look for a wave of anti-gun sentiment in Douglas County.
