Scientists at the Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium have discovered a new species of lemur in Madagascar.
The new species is a dwarf lemur about the size of a squirrel, with monkeylike hands, little black ears, red-brown fur, large black eyes and a bushy tail. It has brownish-black rings around the eyes and has a white underside.
Discovered in northern Madagascars Montagne dAmbre (Amber Mountain) National Park, the new species has been named Andy Sabins dwarf lemur, after a New York businessman who has supported several environmental projects. The species is also known as the Montagne dAmbre dwarf lemur.
Its the 23rd lemur species the zoo staff has discovered since beginning conservation work in Madagascar in 1999. The discovery was made by the zoos Conservation Genetics Department and the Madagascar Biodiversity Partnership, led by Dr. Edward Louis Jr.
