(21,854 posts)People like the teabaggers are both ignorant and absolutely sure about everything. Their certainty doesn't allow them to compromise. They can't ever change or evolve because they think they know everything worth knowing. It's quite a circle.

(24,692 posts)protect "US" from? If so, that would explain why it seems to be relatively easy to whip up the fear that justifies "Prejudice, Bigotry, Misogyny, Homophobia, Racism, Xenophobia".

(43,049 posts)It all goes back to the "Watch out for whatever's in Cave #23."
Our ape ancestors aren't particularly welcoming of outsiders coming in to share/steal food and females, and we haven't fully shed the habit.
Should at least be an interesting discussion amongst any experts in the field.

(15,480 posts)It cuts both ways. For example, those who oppose Hillary only because she's female and those who support Hillary only because she's female.
People whose self image is so low, that the only thing they can feel good about is, for example, that they have lily white skins. Or that religious prayer, thank god I was not born a woman.
Just as bullies are always cowards at heart, the stronger the prejudice, the more insecure that person is and the more self-loathing they struggle to suppress.

Nicely said. People that feel good about themselves are much less likely to be racists, homophobes, bullies or nativists. When you don't feel good about yourself, it is common to look for others who are different from you to look down on. "I may feel bad about myself but at least I am not a --------."

I would say those traits come from a lack of education(in the broadest sense) rather than from an inbred, anti-social intent.
