Des Moines, Iowa – Iowa Republican Chairman Jeff Kaufmann and Democratic Chair Andy McGuire have joined together in a joint argument seeking to defend the state’s leadoff precinct caucuses against detractors who launch a drive to unseat Iowa every four years.

“The caucuses represent grassroots politics at its finest,” the two wrote. “Iowans don’t put a premium on name ID or fundraising numbers – we put a premium on ideas.”

It is hardly a new debate. The state faces a challenge defending its leadoff position every four years and it is one thing on which Republicans and Democrats agree.

“Every four years, we hear the same old refrain from caucus detractors seeking to undermine our role in the presidential nominating process,” the two said. “As many people are aware, the topic was broached just last week.”
